Leveling the Path to Learning

Wells Outreach Multisensory Instruction

It’s never too late!  From the words of a DII Instructor:

"My most unusual experience in tutoring was with a 53 year old veteran.  He was barely able to graduate from high school and clearly had no self confidence.  He felt stupid and stigmatized and decided to join the army mostly because he wanted to get away from everything he had known at home.  He served our country for twelve years and had not been able to keep a steady job since. Fortunately, a teacher in a computer class he was taking asked him if he was dyslexic.  He told her he had no idea, but thought it was worth checking out after she mentioned a few of the signs.  A veteran's group helped get him connected with the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana and I was to be his tutor.  After about ten sessions together, I happened to look up and see a tear running down his cheek while we were working - mind you, this was a hulk of a guy - who shared very little of his thoughts or feelings and he was quietly crying.  I waited until he looked up at me, because I was sincerely worried about what might be wrong.  He finally said "This is HARD - but I'm going to get it!  I'm not STUPID, they just didn't teach it the right way. I've got a long way to go before I can read Shakespeare. Let's go!"

DII’s Wells Outreach Program primarily serves families in Marion and Hamilton County, but services are also available in surrounding areas, including Anderson, Greenfield, Greenwood, Kokomo, North Vernon, Pittsboro, Shelbyville, Springville, and Union City.  Please call DII to find out if a tutor is available in your area.

  • Remedial tutoring services for individuals with difficulties in reading, spelling, writing, language comprehension, oral expressive language, and math.
  • Students are tutored one-on-one using the Orton-Gillingham multisensory phonetic teaching approach for language; math tutoring is also conducted with a multisensory approach.
  • We make every attempt to set up tutoring sessions in an area convenient for both families and tutors. Sessions are frequently held at neighborhood schools, libraries, and public community centers.  For those located near DII, tutoring sessions can be held in our private study rooms.
  • All students (ages 4– adult) diagnosed as having dyslexia or a specific language learning disability are eligible for our tutoring services.  If your child has not been diagnosed, you may choose to have a psycho-educational evaluation completed.
  • Sessions are available twice a week, Monday through Friday, year-round
  • The cost for tutoring is $50 per session. A sliding scale fee is available for those who qualify for financial aid.
